The Return (Vozvrashcheniye) is a 2003 Russian film, directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev, which tells the story of two teenage boys whose father returns home suddenly after a twelve year absence. He takes the boys on a holiday to a remote island on a lake that turns into a test of manhood of almost mythic proportions. It is Andrey Zvyagintsev's debut film, whose father disappeared from his life when he was 6. So I guess it's a very personal movie as well.There are no words to describe the brilliance of this film: breathtaking, emotional and disturbing. The actors, particularly the two boys, are fantastic and the photography is brilliant. An outstanding movie about growing up that everyone must see!
