No.9 is the musical works of multi-instrumentalist "sound designer" Takayuki Joe. Growing up in Tokyo, Joe was interested in a wide range of music including Chicago blues, the jazz of Eric Dolphy and Thelonious Monk and the Japanese modern classical composer Toru Takemitsu. He also dug into Japanese Group Sounds, spy music, animation, funk and psychedelic rock, with one of his all-time favourite albums being the Beatles White Album (which includes the Beatles weirdest ever song “Revolution 9”, with the repeated refrain “No.9, No.9, No.9...”). He composes melodic instrumental music that has many influences, including jazz, ambient, electronica and pop. This is his fifth album, released in 2008. It was released in 2009 in a remix version, which featured work by I Am Robot and Proud, Aus, Kettel and miaou, among others. An outstanding album that brings to mind the likes of World's End Girlfriend and Kashiwa Daisuke. Brilliant!

Born in Hiroshima, Kashiwa Daisuke (柏大輔) started off as the composer and guitarist of post-rock band yodaka in 2001. Being inspired by the band’s psychedelic sound due to a post-rock approach, and by Maurizio Bianchi, he started a solo project in 2004. As a solo artist his idea is to create not only acoustic, but also electronic filmy soundscapes and atmospheres, by melting together a variety of classic instruments, spoken word snippets and crisp beats. With a proper amount of ambient music, all of these form an exquisite sound experience. His first album - april.#02 - was released in 2006, followed by april.#07 - a remix album. Program Music I is his second album, released in 2007, which features only two tracks, whose runtime is still over an hour. It is a brilliant electronic album; particularly the first track, Stella, is out of this world. Highly recommended!

Wooden Shjips is a refreshingly inspired quartet from San Francisco playing loud rock ‘n’ roll in a style heavily influenced by the experimentalism of psychedelia, classical minimalism and garage rock excess. Started as an experiment in rhythmic primitivism and group improvisation, the current lineup brings a more structured rock approach to its performances, utilizing a traditional lineup of drums, bass, organ, guitar and vocals. Dos is their second full-length album, released in 2009. Absolutely brilliant psychedelic music with hints of kraut-rock. Awesome!
World’s End Girlfriend (ワールズ・エンド・ガールフレンド) is Katsuhiko Maeda, a musical genius from Nagasaki but based in Tokyo, Japan. I have already posted his last year's soundtrack, Air Doll. This one is his first album released on Yoshihiro Hanno’s Current label in 2000, which caught people’s attention in Japan and abroad. No need to say much about this artist. One of the greatest musicians in the world. Get it now!

Featuring the base line-up of French metal experimentalists Hypno5e, this band gives the same universe of depth and dark ambience. Along with the Hypno5e base line-up, they include another guitar, cello, chants, tribal percussion and video projections warped from Emmanuel Jessua’s (guitars, vocals, piano, samples) own signature archives and movie extracts. Plus, it’s all done acoustically, while keeping the progressive and epic feel, mood swings from haunting to hopeful, and guitar tones as deep as the abyss. This is their debut album and is available for free download. Really good!

This is his most recent album, released in 2009. It's not easy to put his music in one genre. I'd say that combines neo-classical with electronica and experimental music. Aufgang is a French trio comprised of Juilliard-trained pianists Francesco Tristano and Rami Khalifé as well as drummer Aymeric Westrich. They explore the line between avant-garde, modern classical and four-to-the-floor drumming. This is their debut, released in 2009. Excellent mixture of piano, drums and electronics!
Mountain Men Anonymous was a post-rock band from Gloucestershire via South Glamorgan, Wales (two members have now re-formed as Zail). Their discography includes self-titled demo in 2000, self-titled debut in 2001, a 7” split single between the band and Teflon Monkey and the album posted here, their most recent one. They are currently on "indefinite hiatus". Really good album. Check it out!

Crippled Black Phoenix is a collective of musicians from many other bands (including notably Iron Monkey, Gonga, Mogwai, Electric Wizard and others), formed in 2004 in the UK. Their debut album, "A Love Of Shared Disasters", was recorded at State of Art Studios in Bristol. Geoff Barrow (Portishead), who is a part owner of the studio, produced the disc and released it on his own Invada Records. The band writes what they call "endtime ballads", signifying both the slightly macabre nature of their songs and their unusual blend of styles as the final evolution in music. This strange blend has led to them being called everything from stoner-prog to freak-folk to doom. This is their 2009 brilliant album. Highly recommended!

Dirty Granny Tales is an acoustic/experimental group from Greece, combining puppet theatre acts with music. The compositions are dark, full of gothic lyrics and atmospheric melodies with black metal influences, reminding strongly The Tiger Lillies. This is how they describe themselves:

Adolf Plays the Jazz is a Greek post rock band formed in Athens in the year of 2002. They started creating music for soundtracks of films their friends made. All their music can be downloaded for free from their homepage. Their music combines the art-rock of the 70's (head music) with todays post rock feeling (heart music) through a punk lo-fi - attitude. The terms post-rock and shoegaze might be the most appropriate to describe their music, but Adolf plays the jazz are influenced by everything they listen to, read or see… "Dirty Waters" is their most recent album, released a few days ago and, of course, is available for free download. Great album!

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble (TKDE) formed in 2000 as a project to compose new music for existing silent movies. Jason Köhnen and Gideon Kiers, both graduates of the Utrecht School of Arts. In 2004, British trombonist Hilary Jeffery and Swiss cellist Nina Hitz joined TKDE to record the amazing self-titled debut album which was released on Planet Mu Records in May 2006. The ensuing tour saw Eelco Bosman and Paris based vocalist Charlotte Cegarra join, forming the Ensemble into a sextet. London based violinist Sadie Anderson joined in 2008 to supply the group with extra power on stage. Their music cannot really be placed in one genre. They combine traditional instruments with some electronics and improvisation; the result is a fusion of jazz, dark-jazz, classical and experimental music. This is their most recent album. Awesome!

Formed in late 2004 and signed to the ATP label, they released their fantastic first album, Street Horrrsing, in 2008 and received widespread acclaim. This is their second album released earlier this month: “The album, ‘Tarot Sport’, is one of unbound possibility and lucid cohesion; a cerebral pilgrimage that refines, crafts, explores and develops the experimental aesthetic of last year’s critically acclaimed debut, ‘Street Horrrsing.’” ATP One of the best electronic albums of the year! Many instruments are used (which makes every song in the album unique) such as piano, flute, djembe, accordion, mandolin etc. Really impressive! All in all, a very promising debut that everyone should give a listen. Recommended!
